Gahongaire Emelda decided to become a pastor after witnessing the love for God that her grandfather had. After the genocide, she decided to serve God by helping orphans, and she adopted Manirakiza Jean de Dieu, who she considers to be her own son. Manirakiza Jean de Dieu has many important questions about the causes of the genocide, and Gahongaire Emelda patiently answers him and gives him advice. She tells him that the most important thing is to love God and fight against anything that could lead to genocide again.
“The message I can give him is to fight against anything that can make genocide happen again. I think that this is even the message that should be delivered by the government. That Ministries should try to teach youth how to live with each other and fight against genocide because it was perpetuated by the youth. In fact, I think that’s what I can try to tell him and I ask him to encourage other young people to fight against anything that can cause genocide. We have to talk about what happened so that it may not occur again.” Gahongaire Emelda
“She is the person who usually gives me advice about my life, how I should behave in the future, and she shows me some examples of the youth that are my age. As she said before, long ago the youth were taught bad things and they committed atrocities. That’s why she tells me: ‘You are grown up and you are allowed to do everything but you should avoid bad things.’” Manirakiza Jean de Dieu
