Older brother Niyiguba Emmanuel explains in great detail the genocide that resulted in the brothers' loss of several siblings and one parent. Rugira Jean Rene recounts to his brother the details of the genocide and ethnic discrimination that he is familiar with and Niyiguba Emmanuel elaborates on these facts with more details and additional information, helping his younger brother to understand his country's and family's history better. Niyiguba Emmanuel describes both the political reasons for the genocide to his brother, and how normal individuals were able to become perpetrators of violence due to dehumanizing and sensationalist ideologies. The two of them discuss how Rwanda's political system has progressed following the genocide and how valuable inter-ethnic dialogue will be to the country's future success.
"Hope is a word that gives someone strength when they are afraid in order for them to regain their lives. For instance, if someone threatens you and chokes you, there is need for someone else to come in and comfort you and convince you that whatever happened will nto happen again. These are our new goals, let us focus on security, let us prevent quarrels, let us avoid negative ideologies. We need to stand up and resist all of this." Niyiguba Emmanuel
"And I would wonder how can a person see an animal when they look at another person to the point where they wish for that person to die? Did this really come out of the hearts of Rwandese or were there other people who were flaming these fires among them?" Rugira Jean Rene
